Blizzard Hates Competitive PvP Arena

People have been wondering every season why no one queues, arena queues dry up and the game ends up in a dead stale state. This is because the matchmaking system and scaling of it is totally fucked, saturated and diluted. At the start of the season the MMR of EVERYONE is reset to 1500, and the match making rating gain and loss works like an elastic band that loses its elasticity over time, as you play arena games, if you play at the start with a good comp combined with a winning streak you will sky rocket to high ratings and MMR; everyone else around you is also queueing and gaining a shit ton of MMR everytime they win a match (say 100-200 Match Making Rating per win – the gain diminishes as your win to loss ratio in the system lowers).

Here’s one prime example of a team that played the first two weeks of the season and has camped that rating since then and also played a 3v3 team on outland, only to be stuck at 2350 with 300 games played. I’m not pointing these players out as bad or anything, they obviously hop teams/comps for FUN which is what I do – you get penalized with -200 MMR loss when you change team.

As you can see 2820 as RMP, pve daggers and not many RLS around. – best comp at the start of season 11. It’s not as good now with full gear as seen in NAO tournament when khunas RMP got facerolled by an all-rounded inferior team playing RLS (in my opinion). I think everyone agrees on the RLS part.

Here is some of the same players, stuck at 2350 rating with 300 games played. Prime example of the Match Making Rating being flawed:

Why is this bad?

Because top players love to take the rank 1 spot and compete for it throughout the season, when it becomes linear like this with no dynamics or variables noone logs in or plays, noone cares. The above examples aren’t me pointing the finger at certain teams. I hop teams a lot simply to play for fun but you get punished with MMR penalties and whatever else Blizzard implemented in Season 11. So far Blizzard have fucked over many seasons:

Seasons that have been severely flawed so far by Blizzards’ lack of knowledge in the MMR, Arena and rating systems; their own game:

Season 6 – Queueing system changed 2 weeks before season end where there would be a 10 minute gap between facing the same team – lowered to 5 minutes 1 week before but still fucked over many people.

Season 7 and 8 seemed great in terms of competitive nature.

Season 9 – MMR bugging where bad players could bug their way to 3k+ MMR then simply win a few games to rank 1 (prime example was a russian warlock at 3.2k rating with full blue honor gear).

Season 10 – Blizzard changed the MMR after roughly 4 weeks into the season without resetting ratings; they lowered everyones MMR across the board by 300 or something daft.
Therefore it was IMPOSSIBLE to reach rank 1 in 3v3 unless it was on a BG with relatively low top ratings (roughly 2600).

Season 11 – Problem as stated above, ratings and MMR sky rocket then they slowly diminish, especially if you hop teams and play with friends etc.

Solution: Implement a rating-decay system where you lose rating over-time if you do not queue a certain amount of games per week – so that the ladder stays competitive throughout. Simples.

Bugs and stuff with Jimos (new video tomorrow)

Been recording some MoP beta lately with Jimos but it’s terribly buggy… Thought I’d go over some of the abilities/talents that I missed and leave you with some of the bugs we encountered (the video will be up tomorrow btw)

Current state of Hunters in MoP (Mists of Pandaria)

Just a quick post to address some things that need to be tweaked in beta right now for Hunters and what I think of them so far.

After testing the class a bit in duels it seems to be designed very well by blizzard even though it’s early beta right now; the fact that every spec can have Silencing Shot & Readiness strengthens the class as a whole.

What this does is it basically makes Survival better than Marksmanship by default – who wouldn’t pick a purely magic damage specialization that comes with the best of Cataclysm/WotLK Marksmanship tree (Silence shot and Readiness) and the ever important entrapment passive bonus that ONLY Survival gets. Beast Mastery with the Kill Command change to 25 yard range also removes the clunkyness of the ability and Readiness also resets the cooldown of Beastial Wrath now – I predict that Survival will be competing with Beast Mastery in terms of PvP viability.

As for Marksmanship, what’s left of it? There’s no selling point; rumour has it blizzard wants to make Marksmanship redundant in MoP as it’s been the main spec for the entire lifespan of Hunters in World of Warcraft.

Re-work of our main snare

There was one thing, however, that I do not like at all – which is the removal of Concussive Shot which got baked into Arcane Shot, Cost: 25 Focus 65% weapon damage +3500 as Arcane damage. Now I feel that with the removal of Raptor Strike, Wing Clip & Concussive Shot, blizzard wanted to free up some of our bar space thus baking our snare into Arcane Shot. I have mixed feelings about this as we have to save 25 focus to snare people which only lasts 6 seconds, and right now in Cataclysm I use Concussive Shot a lot on focus targets such as priests to prolong them fearing or to prevent it. I feel, although this may be an attempt for blizzard to free up bar space, it is not a good thing for competitive PvP and feels like a somewhat careless and rash decision on Blizzards part. It also decreases the flexibility of the Hunter class but the positive is that it potentially frees up one global but does cost a nice chunk of focus considering its duration is only 6 seconds long (you also have to use a glyph slot to get this slow – not good!)

I hope Concussive Shot is brought back as it feels like it’s the only thing missing to make the class feel fluid and good right now in Mists of Pandaria!

Braindeadly 4 – When?

Braindeadly 4 is officially being released on the 13th of April 19:00 CET.

My previous montage from last August, Braindeadly 3:

2012 World of Warcraft Arena Pass

Blizzard just announced that there will be a an Arena Pass this year for level 85, not level-90 Mists of Pandaria as some people thought It would be.

As MMOs are never balanced, much like WoW my bets are that the top teams will mainly consist of Demon armor/Spirit link/x… Sorry I meant Warlock/Shaman/x and the odd triple DPS or RMP team – Also a lot of the top healers in Europe have quit in the past months due to the game being stale, next to dead and due to the healing specs being so boring I guess… so it will be interesting to see who actually participates. I’ll probably play some PHDK/PriestHDK and Triple DPS personally.

The Arena Pass is coming next week.
Quote from Blizzard official fan site:

We’re pleased to announce that the 2012 World of Warcraft Arena Pass is nearly here. Starting April 10, players will be able to sign up to compete against like-minded individuals in a dedicated Arena sandbox. The Arena Pass service will feature access to Arena Pass realms with level-85 character templates and epic gear from Cataclysm.

As an added bonus, we have included an exclusive reward that players can earn by purchasing their Arena Pass and participating in the competition — an Armored Murloc in-game pet. Top players will also contend for a chance to achieve the “Vanquisher” title for their live characters. Players that choose to take part in the 2012 Arena Pass will also receive access to a special level-90 realm with upgraded epic gear after the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion is released and they’ve upgraded their accounts.

If you would like to demonstrate your Arena prowess, are eager for a chance to earn the exclusive loot, or just want to reserve a spot in the level-90 Mists of Pandaria Arena Pass realm, please check back next week for more details and be sure to register!
